Her mother tells her to eat breakfast, but Ion says she doesn't want any. Her mother gets all teary so she eats it. Her mother says that the summer festival is coming up so she'll let Ion wear a yukata. Ion says she deosn't really need one, but her mother insists, saying that because Ion doesn't have a father, she wants to do everything possible that a mother can do. Ion then tells her mother that the cooking pot is overflowing, the frying pan is burnt and the washing machine sounds funny. Then she leaves and says not to mention the things about her father ever again since they promised. After Ion leaves, her mother sees something on the floor. It's Ion's pendant (Mikado's experiment) and her mother wonders if it is Ion's and she says "It couldn't be..." Ion arrives late to school and enters the class room in a cheery mood. The teacher is puzzled because 'Ion' answered during the roll call. Ion sees Tagosaku in her seat, dressed up as her. She is about to beat up Tagosaku but he says he was doing her a favour. The teacher tells her to sit down for the time being because she is going to introduce a new student to the class. Ion sees the new girl and thinks she's really cute/pretty. Then she notices Mikado, who doesn't look very pleased. Then Toudaiji tells Ion that the girl is Mikado's ex. The girl smiles and says her name is Minase Ai. At lunch (or some break) Ion gives Mikado an apple danish which is apparently hard to get. Mikado thanks her, but is still blue. Ion tells her friends that he's still really blue. They tell her that she should be more worried about other things and Ion blushes. She says that of course she has a lot to worry about, but Mikado is her strongest thought right now. She calls Mikado over again and tells him to close his eyes. Mikado asks if it's one of her tricks again. She tells him to close his eyes anyway and he says that it's the jinx again. Ion agrees and Mikado says the jinx. When he says "do" Ion pops a party cracker in his face. She asks if he was surprised and he says obviously! Ion tells him that when he was surprised, he didn't think about anything so if he does it all day, then his bad thoughts will go away! Mikado laughs, then agrees. Someone walks into the room and Mikado and Ion both pop the cracker. At the door is Ai. She wonders who showed her to the club room and then the class rep comes soon after and Ion knows who it was. Ion smiles at him and while he's in a daze, she calls over 'dummy Ion' which is Tagosaku dressed up as her and gets him to tie up the class rep. Tagosaku still owes Ion a favour from saving him last time so he obediently ties up the class rep. Mikado asks Ai what she wants and Ai answers that he shouldn't be so cold since she moved schools to chase after him. Mikado tells her that he doesn't have any feelings for her and Ai says she knows it's the same as when they broke up. She realised when he said OK to her that he only did because she was the best in the club and she was probably just the same as his admiration for Psycho Man. Ion thinks to herself that Ai is just the same as her. Ai says that now she's back and she can use real telekenesis power. She pulls out a spoon and says some words, then it bends. Toudaiji then tells her that Mikado has already found someone better than her. Ai notices Ion as the late comer in class. She says that if she is better than Ion, Mikado will take her to the summer festival. Ion then says that she'll take the challenge. She thinks to herself that she can make that spoon bend like crazy. She tries her jinx, but then realises that she doesn't have the pendant. Ai then says that Ion isn't as good as her and is glad that she won the promise of Mikado taking her. Ai grabs onto Mikado's arm and he blushes, telling her to get off him. Ion sees him blush, then runs off. Manami and Kiyo chan follow her and Mikado is confused. The class rep looks on, satisfied. Ion is at her house, crying on her bed and her friends are eating cake. Kiyo chan says that if it was such a shock to her, why didn't she use her powers? Ion says that's not why she's crying. She's crying because when Ai touched him, Mikado blushed but he hugs her and holds her all the time. To Mikado, Ion is just a "magical power girl" and Ai is actually a "girl". Kiyo chan asks that didn't Ion say it was enough to be close to him? Ion replies that she's lost that confidence now. Kiyo chan suggests that Ion should confess her love. Ion wonders what to do as her heart and mind are confused. Her mother pops in with Ion's yukata, but Ion is all blue and she doesn't want to go. Her mother tells her that a boy is outside waiting for her. Ion perks up, hoping it's Mikado but when she goes outside, it's only the class rep. The class rep tells her that she looks really cute in a yukata. Ion wonders if Mikado will say the same, then agrees to go with the class rep. At the festival, Mikado is with Ai. Mikado seems to be in a daze all night. Ai asks if that girl (Ion) means so much to him. Mikado says it's nothing. He thinks to himself that he's never seen Ion's face as sad as that. Mikado then spots Ion and the class rep walking together. He runs off to get Ion away from the class rep. Ai asks where he's going. Ion turns around and wonders if she just heard Mikado's voice. The class rep gets mad, then hugs her and tries to attack her. Ion hears a voice again and says "There! See? Someone's saying help!" Then they realise that a little boy is drowing in the river nearby. Mikado comes running and overhears them talking about the little boy. He yells at Ion to lift the boy up in the air. Ion sees him, then Ai says that Ion can't do anything if she can't even bend a spoon. Ai decides to save the kid herself and moves a piece of wood floating in the water. She tells the boy to hold onto the wood, but it's going too fast because of the current. It's about to hit the boy. Ion says her jinx and then flies just in time to catch the boy and split the wood into smitherines. She floats back to the bridge they were on and Mikado praises her. He then notices her yukata and starts to say something. Ion is hoping to hear him say that it looks pretty, but instead he says that it would get in the way when she uses her powers. Ion punches him in the stomach and stomps off with the class rep. Mikado asks what's wrong and she sticks her tongue out at him. Mikado is glad that at least she's happier and walks along with them. Ai is left behind, thinking "Never give up" ~ END OF CHAPTER 3 ~
