Ion by - Tanemura Arina Chapter 4 - Love for love's sake (Len ai Shijoushugi) During Science class, Ion asks Ai to be her partner but Ai refuses. Ion asks why and Ai says that she knows that Ion likes Hourai (Mikado) as well. Ion introduces herself as Tsuburagi Ion because she notices that Ai calls her 'anata' instead of 'Ion'. Then Ai says that she only calls people she respects by their name. Ai walks off and Kiyo chan and Manami come to talk to Ion, overhearing what Ai said. They tell her to leave Ai alone. Ion says that Ai hasn't had any girl friends since she came to the school so she wants to be friends. Kiyo chan looks over at Ai surrounded by boys and comments, leaving Ion to agree silently. Ai thinks to herself that all the boys around her are unsophisticated and thinks that they should be like Hourai, clever and smart or else they wouldn't match with her! She glances over at Mikado and she sees him being a scientific idiot with Toudaiji. Mikado and Toudaiji have done some science experiment and they're really happy. Then, the class rep comes in shouting Ion's name. Mikado's ears grow really big, picking up the voice. The class rep comes and hugs Ion, saying she's so cute. Ion tells him to let go. Mikado comes and pours his science experiment down the class rep's back. The class rep asks what he's doing and he says "Shut up, come with me!" Mikado takes the class rep outside and tells him that Ion is his and not to lay a hand on her ever again. Then the class rep asks if he means that Ion is his because she can use psychic powers or because she's a girl. Mikado tells him that Ion is Ion and not be stupid. He slams the door shut to the class room, leaving the class rep furious. Then, Ai calls the class rep over and says she has something to talk to him about. Mikado is in the class room thinking that Ion is Ion... isn't she? Later, Mikado and Ion are talking about how much she can use her powers, when, etc. Mikado stares at her really hard and Ion asks why. Mikado says it's nothing and goes onto the next question. He thinks to himself that because the class rep said those things, he's bothered by it. Mikado asks if she's tired after using her powers. She replies that after lifting heavy things, she gets a bit tired. Then he asks when she started using the jinx. Ion doesn't answer for a while, then says it was since her father died. She has a flashback of her father saying that miracles will happen. Then Ion smiles and says although she doesn't remember much because she was little. Mikado then slaps himself several times and Ion is puzzled. Mikado says that he's sorry he made her feel sad again. Ion asks "again?" and he says that since Minase (Ai) came, she was sad too. Ion wonders if Mikado is worried about her and is a little happy. Mikado tells her that he doesn't know why, but he doesn't like it when Ion isn't herself. He says that he was just thinking to try hard to keep her smiling and then made her sad. Ion reassures him that she'll always be smiling, but Mikado is depressed. Ion suggests the jinx again and Mikado does it. In his hand is a small Psycho Man doll. Mikado asks if she made it and she says she did. Then Ion gets a bit dperessed thinking that maybe if it was Ai, she would have done it better. Then Ion suddenly asks Mikado what he thinks about Ai right now. Mikado is a bit panikcy and Ion asks if he still likes her. He's about to answer when....... Ai appears in front of them with the class rep and Tagosaku in clown suits with drums. (^^) Ion and Mikado crack up laughing. Ai challenges Ion to a strength test and if Ion wins, she'll leave Mikado alone. But if she wins, Ion will have to disappear from Mikado's life. Mikado tells Ion not to take such a stupid challenge, but Ion smiles and says that a hero always wins. The test is for Ion to lift up a ball from a box and for Ai to open a lock with her powers and take out the ball from the box. Ion takes up the challenge and Ai thinks to herself, glad that Ion fell for the trick. Inside Ion's box is actually a lead ball. Ion asks Ai that after the contest, Ai would call her "Ion". Ai says that if she wins, she will respect her. Mikado starts the test and as soon as Ion gets to the box, the class rep and Tagosaku start playing on their drums. Ion bursts out laughing because they look so funny. Ai thinks to herself that since Ion isn't concentrating, she can beat her.... but instead, Ai ends up rolling on the ground laughing as well. Ion then manages to shout "ION!" but nothing happens. Ion frowns, wondering why it doesn't float (obviously because it's lead) and then says aloud "Even though I've got that experimental thing". Then Mikado wonders why she has it when it should have burned down with the shed. Ion tries again and it floats a little bit. Ai tries again. Then suddenly, there's a hole burned into the tree nearby. Mikado notices and wonders what it is. He thinks that maybe it's Ion's powers, but Ion is concentrating so it has to be Ai. He tells her to stop using her powers and because she's not concentrating, her powers are going everywhere. Ion tells her to stop as well. More holes appear in the tree. Ai says she won't stop because she's about to win. Ai is taking the ball out of her box when the branch falls on top of them. Ion uses her power to freeze the branch and tells Ai to run. Ai asks why she helped her when she could have won instead. Ai admits that she cheated so that Ion would lose and Ion says that she knew. Ai says that's even more stupid, but Ion says that if she doesn't trust Ai, than Ai can't trust her back. She smiles and asks Ai to call her "Ion" even though she lost because "anata" doesn't seem very friendly. Ai says "You really are stupid... Ion...". And Ai apologises and Ion forgives her. Ion smiles, saying that Ai looks much nicer when she's smiling. Then Ion faints. Ion is in the medical room at school. The doctor says that it's only strain. Everyone is by her bedside. Mikado says that it's because she used too much of her power. The clas rep asks why, when she's lifted a person before. Mikado throws the lead ball to the class rep and feels how heavy it is. Mikado says it's his fault that he didn't stop her from using her powers. Ai calls him over to have a few words in private. She says she'll make it short. Ai and Mikado are on the school rooftop when Ai says that she doesn't actually love Mikado. Mikado is stunned. Ai explains that she thought that looks and brains were important but it was also this concept that she wanted a guy that would match up with her because she has high pride. She understood from that test that she was so wrapped up in winning, that she didn't even listen to Mikado. She says she's sorry she's been bothering him but she was just angry because she got dumped. She says casually that a scientific idiot and a psychic power girl would make a good couple. Mikado is puzzled, but Ai says that she knows he likes Ion. And Mikado agrees. Back in the medical room, Ion wakes up and finds the class rep stroking her hair. She throws everything in sight at him and screams. The class rep thinks it was unlucky since he was going to do something while no one was here. Ion asks where she is and the class rep tells her. Ion sits up and gets dizzy. The class rep hugs her and says that he loves her. Ion asks if he's being stupid again and tells him to let go. The class rep says that he doesn't want Ion to get hurt following Mikado's dream. Back on the rooftop, Ai tells Mikado that even though now she knows that she doesn't like him, she did get hurt when she got dumped. She says that if his feelings towards Ion are love, then it's okay but if he's being disillusioned with his science and admiration again, then he's going to hurt Ion this time.... ~ END OF CHAPTER 4 ~
