Ai says that if he really likes her, then that's okay. And that the should be heading back. They come back into the room and Ion looks relieved to see Mikado. He asks if she's okay and then glares at the class rep. They argue again and Ai asks if it's okay for her to get up already. Ion says she's okay. She wonders where the two of them went and Ai asks if she's worried. Ion says yes and Ai says she won't tell her. Ion frowns, but then Ai laughs and says she'll tell her....... Then Ion's mother comes running in. Ion shouts "Mum!" and the other three are shocked. (Ion's mum looks quite young) Mikado repeats "Mother!?", Ai says "Mama!?" and the class rep says "Okan!?" (it's a sort of dialect slang for the term "mum") They say she's very young and her mum giggles, saying that Ion was her child at 16!!! Her mother got a call from the school doctor and came. Her mother sees the experimental piece and asks what it is. Ion screams in her head, wondering why it's there. Then her mother asks if Ion used her powers. Ion asks why her mother knows. Mikado says that he made that from a journal of a scientist. And asks Ion for confirmation. Ion agrees. Ion's mother asks the name of the scientist. Mikado says that he only knew the initials, Y.T. Her mother says, "Y.. Tsuburagi Yuuki..." and explains that he was Ion's deceased father. Then her mother says that if this isn't what he made, then the other one must be still "there", in Ion's body. Everyone is shocked, and gazes at Ion with suspicious eyes. When Ion was three years old, she took her to see Yuuki at his work place to take him something he forgot. Then, she had taken her eyes off Ion for only a second when Ion swallowed the experimental piece! They all look at Ion with suspicious eyes again. Then, her mother explains the importance of her jinx. The jinx "I-O-N" was actually the password to bring out the power in her. She says that if need be, Ion could one day bring out the power in her with the jinx. Ion remembers when she is with her father, sitting on his shoulders and he tells her about her jinx and how it will bring miracles. Ion then says that she's said the jinx a lot of times, but nothing ever happened before. Then Mikado cuts in, saying that there was only one. You need two to bring out the power. He asks if Ion knew of any incident where the two pieces interacted. Ion says she does, remembering the fuzzy electrocuting feeling when she first touched Mikado's piece. Her mother tells Ion that he wrote her a letter with details written in it. Mikado is suddenly really happy that the whole thing was real and gets all ambitious again. Her mother says she has to go to work, but she doesn't want to let Ion go home by herself. Mikado says that he'll walk her home. Ion is really happy and Ai says she'll do her hair for her. Ion's mother calls over Mikado and looks at him. She smiles and thinks to herself that his eyes are just like her husband. Then she giggles and Mikado is looking at her, puzzled. Ai has done Ion's hair for her and she and Mikado walk home. Mikado puts his arm around her shoulder and Ion screams. They both blush and Ion is thinking to herself that she's so nervous because they're walking home together alone for the first time. Then Mikado tells her to close her eyes and Ion says "Hm? My jinx?" Mikado says that good things happen when she says her jinx, right? So Ion says her jinx and then Mikado takes her hand. He's blushing really red and Ion sees it and smiles. She wonders if Mikado is seeing her as a girl now. She wants to be his most important person and if she holds his hand, she hopes that he won't let go. Ion apologises to Mikado for hiding the fact that she had his experimental piece. He says it's okay, and then tells Ion not to use her powers any more. She says she's fine, but then Mikado says that he doesn't like it. He says that he wants her to be smiling all the time. Ion asks if she isn't needed any more. He says he does need her, she's an important existence to him. Then he laughs and says if he knew this, he should have asked her something before. Ion asks what it is. He says that he wanted to fly in the sky with Ion. He laughs it off, then they fly off into the air. Mikado tells her to let them down in case she's going to faint again. Ion says it's fine, then she thinks to herself that it's so romantic. They're floating in the air talking and Ion says that she didn't think Mikado would want to fly in the air. Mikado says that that's because Ion said so in the first place. He says that when they first talked, Ion had said that she wanted to fly in the air. Ion asks if he had remembered that. Mikado says he was really happy because when he'd talked to other people about being a psychic, they said that he's a really smart boy so it would be a waste or it seemes childish. Everyone made fun of him, but Ion didn't laugh. He was really happy because of that. Suddenly, rain starts to fall so they float back down under some shelter. Mikado asks if Ion is okay since he was involved in his talking. Ion then holds his hand tight and says she loves him. Mikado grabs Ion and hugs her, then is about to kiss her when he remembers Ai saying "You'll hurt her" and the class rep saying "Do you want her close to you because she can use powers? Or is it as a girl?" Mikado pulls her away and Ion is still teary. He says that he's sorry, but he doesn't see Ion in that way. Ion slaps him and says that if he didn't have any feelings, he shouldn't have held her or done anything hopeful. She tells him that she was really happy before that he said he needed her because she could use her powers, but she's really not that strong or really that great.... She's just a girl. Ion says goodbye and runs away. Others from school see Mikado and they walk over to him. Kiyo chan says that they heard Ion fainted. Then Toudaiji realises that his cheek is red and says he should put an icepack on it. Mikado says he's fine... Ion is hurting more. Ion is running home and keeps repeating her jinx. Ion slams her door shut and keeps saying her jinx over and over. A picture on the wall falls down and a letter from behind slips out. Ion laughs out loud, then cries. Sobbing, she says "Why won't this one miracle that I want, happen...?" ~ END OF CHAPTER 5 ~
